5 Coaching Tips To Use AI to Your Advantage

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) will only have a limited effect on your swim training if you don't use it in the right way. Trusting everything your AI or algorythm says blindly is a recipe for disaster, as is ignoring the insights it can produce about you and your training habits.

Here are 5 ways to get the most of AI-supported swim training:

  1. Give the technology the right information about you

You can't expect good data to come from bad data. If your age, experience level or weight has changed, make sure your AI knows about it.

  1. Use a good wearable device

AI is going to be making use of the data you capture during your workouts. The less data you capture, the less the AI can use to give you insights or tweak your training plan. I'm a fan of Garmin because it captures a huge amount of data for no subscription cost.

  1. Commit to a trial period to let your AI calibrate

If your AI is giving you a training plan but you're changing the workouts to suit you in the first couple of weeks, it will be tricky to baseline your data.

  • Stick to the Plan: Follow the AI-generated workouts exactly during the first couple of weeks, even if some sessions feel easy or hard at first.

  • Duration: A trial period of 4 to 6 weeks is usually enough for the AI to gather sufficient data and fine-tune your training plan.

  • Consistency Matters: Regular swimming sessions provide the AI with a clearer picture of your endurance, recovery, and response to training.

  • Avoid Manual Overrides: Resist the urge to skip or modify workouts during this phase, as it can confuse the AI and slow down the calibration process.

By committing to this period, you allow the app to build a personalized training profile that matches your strengths and weaknesses, leading to better progress and fewer plateaus.

  1. Reflect on your progress regularly

Tracking your swim data is only useful if you take time to review and reflect on it. Reflection helps you understand what’s working, what needs adjustment, and how your body responds to training.

  • Weekly Reviews: Set aside time each week to look at your swim metrics, such as distance, pace, stroke efficiency, and heart rate trends.

  • Identify Patterns: Notice if you improve steadily, hit plateaus, or experience fatigue. This insight helps you communicate with the app or coach if adjustments are needed.

  • Adjust Goals: As you progress, update your goals in the app to keep workouts challenging and relevant.

  • Use App Features: Many AI swim apps offer progress reports, charts, and feedback. Use these tools to stay motivated and informed.

Reflection turns raw data into actionable knowledge. It also encourages a growth mindset, helping you stay engaged and committed to your swim training journey.
